Screen Refurbishing vs. New Screens for Repair Shops

How a screen refurbishing service compares with buying new screens: where repair shops save, what to check, and when new stock still makes sense.

By ReCellZone team · Updated

Refurbishing re-glasses the original OLED or LCD you already own instead of replacing the whole assembly, which usually costs a shop far less per screen. Our refurbishing starts at $40 per screen, and the screen you get back is your own original panel.

What does a screen refurbishing service actually do?

Most cracked phones come in with broken front glass over a panel that still works. Refurbishing removes the cracked glass from the original OLED or LCD, cleans the panel, and bonds new glass onto it. The result is the same panel the phone shipped with, under fresh glass.

At Cell Zone USA we do this with OEM-grade glass, YMJ and NJLD laminators, a clean room, and UV curing. The clean room matters more than most people expect, because a single speck of dust trapped under the glass shows up as a bright spot on a finished screen.

We refurbish original screens for iPhone, Samsung, iPad, and Apple Watch. For the full workflow from request to return shipment, see how it works.

Where do repair shops save money by refurbishing?

The main saving is that you pay for new glass and skilled labor, not for a whole new display assembly. Our refurbishing starts at $40 per screen. Full per-model prices are shown to registered members only, so check your account for the exact figure on the models you send.

The second saving is less obvious. A shop that buys a replacement panel pays for the panel and is left holding the customer's cracked original, which then sits in a drawer. If that original is a working OLED, it is worth something either way: you can refurbish it for reuse, or sell it through buyback.

The third saving is fewer comebacks. A refurbished original panel keeps the color, brightness, and touch behavior your customer already had. Shops that fit lower-grade aftermarket panels often field complaints about dimmer displays, tinted whites, or lost features. A comeback costs you the repair, the labor, and some goodwill.

Put together, the savings come from four places.

  • Glass and labor instead of a full replacement assembly.
  • The cracked original stays useful instead of becoming scrap.
  • Original panel behavior means fewer "my screen looks different" complaints.
  • One supplier relationship for both refurbishing and buyback.

Is a refurbished original screen better than a new aftermarket one?

It depends on what your customer is paying for. On a current flagship such as an iPhone 17 Pro Max or iPhone 16 Pro Max, customers notice display quality immediately, and they are the least forgiving about it. An original panel with new glass preserves what they paid for.

New aftermarket screens have a place, particularly on older or budget models where the customer wants the lowest price and does not care much about panel quality. Be honest with the customer about which one they are getting. Our guide on spotting copy screens covers how to tell the difference when you receive stock.

A refurbished original is not a magic fix, though. It only works when the panel underneath is healthy.

When does refurbishing not make sense?

Glass-only refurbishing cannot repair a damaged display layer. If the panel has green or pink lines, dead zones, burn-in, or a failed touch layer, new glass will not change that. You pay only for screens that pass testing, so a damaged panel does not become a refurbishing charge.

Our team includes a technician who specializes in OLED line repair, but whether a particular panel is worth repairing is a judgment made after testing, not before. Do not promise your own customer an outcome until the screen has been tested.

Refurbishing is also the wrong tool when the frame or flex cable is the real problem. A bent frame or a torn flex needs a different repair.

If a screen cannot be refurbished but the panel is an original with working display and touch, it may still have value. Those can be sold through buyback.

How do you compare the true cost per screen?

Do not compare sticker prices alone. Build the number from the whole repair. For each option, write down what you pay for the part, what you pay for shipping, how many minutes your technician spends on it, and how often the job comes back.

With refurbishing, add the cost of shipping screens to us and the return shipping on your quote. The quote also includes a payment processing fee when you pay through PayPal. Refurbishing pays off best when you send screens in batches, because you spread the shipping across many pieces.

Then look at your own cracked-screen volume. A shop that produces a steady stream of cracked originals gets the most from refurbishing, because the supply is already coming through the door.

Here is a short worksheet to run for any screen you are weighing.

  • Part or service price per screen (refurbishing starts at $40).
  • Shipping in both directions, divided by the number of screens in the batch.
  • Technician time to fit and test each screen.
  • Expected comeback rate, and the cost of one comeback.

What turnaround and warranty should you expect?

Turnaround depends on batch size: one day for 1 to 10 screens, two to three days for 10 to 20 screens, and four to five days for batches over 20.

Every refurbished screen is covered by a 45-day warranty; the returns policy lists what is covered. Two testers check each box before it goes out, and our defect rate is 1 percent.

Ship with tracking and add the tracking number to your request, so you can see when the box arrives and when the clock starts.

How do you get started?

Register a business account, submit a refurbish request listing the models and quantities, and ship your screens. We test them, send you a quote for the ones that pass, and return the finished screens.

Start with a small batch of screens you already have on the shelf. Compare the result with your usual supplier on a real job, then decide how much volume to move over.

If you handle both cracked originals and finished repairs, keep them separated by model from the start. It makes both a refurbish request and a buyback request faster to fill out.
